The Keeper Project is in Nambour...
Eleven Nambour based artists have been selected to take on the role of Keepers until February 2025. The local artists come from a diverse range of creative practices including photography, costume design, spoken word, theatre and multi-media practice.
Each artist will be present in the Nambour community for three weeks over a nine month period.
They will be exploring the streets and sites of Namba/Nambour and uncovering the uniqueness of the town. Through their creative act in the public realm they will make visible the things that go unseen.
You will encounter the Keepers as you go about your everyday life or follow the project as it passes from Keeper to Keeper.
You may meet one Keeper auditing significant trees in the town and another playing scrabble with passers-by to uncover Nambour's vernacular and favourite words.
The Keepers will be logging their journey like any good explorer.
Keep an eye on this website for logs and updates, follow us on Instagram and Facebook or visit the Keeper office at 2nd Space off Howard Street.
The Keeper Project is produced by Red Chair and developed in collaboration with Field Theory in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council.

Living in the Nambour community is the first time I have felt like I have a family.
I am really drawn to the town’s alleyways and backstreets.

My life changed when I moved to Nambour. I have had so many pivotal experiences here, both distressing and beautiful.
Bad Habit Records is one of my favourite places because Aaron was one of the first people to reach out to me and through that relationship I held my first solo exhibition and met some of the local art crew.

Nambour has just got me. Working here, having a studio here, the authentic nature of the people here, who put in so much to make connections with each other. It feels unapologetic and real.

I feel like Nambour is this little underdog and with my work I am always fighting for people to see its beauty. I think being the Keeper is a chance for me to show people how I view it.

Nambour has a bunch of nooks and crannies to investigate.
I have a history with the Old Ambo but I just really like Howard Street, it’s a place to hang out, walk up and down, talk to people.

I feel like Nambour is a connector for the whole of the Sunshine Coast.
It’s been a real healing place for me.

Nambour reminds me of all different aspects of life and living and puts them all up against each other and helps me remember the friction and the joy in each moment.

I was born in Nambour and grew up here.
It’s a different place to that of my childhood but every street holds a memory.
Those memories are resurfacing now.

Working with the people in Nambour is important to me because this place is important to me.
It is a rich magical place.
I mostly like the places where no one else goes.

I didn’t realise how much I was drawn to Quota Park.
When I go for a walk, I just kind of find myself heading down there.

I was born and raised in Nambour and it’s been home base for 31 years now.
As a child I would sit on a bench outside the shops and just talk to people who came near. I feel like I have always been collecting the stories of Nambour.
